Next Steps
Art therapy uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages.
"It is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight.” (American Art Therapy Association website)
I have witnessed wonderful growth, change, and therapeutic breakthroughs using art therapy as a tool in my practice. Art can serve as another form of expression when words are difficult to find. One does not need to have any artistic ability whatsoever to benefit from this type of therapy. Very often, just the process of creating can be a healing experience. The creative process offers another way to look at things as well as an opportunity to externally manipulate and change an inner experience.
